D23: 2019 News and Announcements

This year Disney’s D23 Expo is bigger than ever. There were so many announcements, reveals, and trailers that it’s easy to miss out on some of the news. Here is a list of everything that I could find from the Expo to make sure you are up to date on everything Disney!


Marvel

  • ‘Black Panther’ has a release date: May 6th, 2022.
    • No other details of information was released about the film.
  • ‘The Eternals’ cast appeared on stage and showcased the costumes that will be worn in the film.
    • Kit Harrington will be joining the cast as the Black Knight.
  • Another trailer for ‘Black Widow’ was shown to the audience, not released to the general public yet, that featured David Harbour’s character.
  • Disney+ shows were announced for Moonknight, She Hulk, and Ms. Marvel
    • No specific details for the shows were announced.
  • The ‘What If…?’ show will have one episode for every film in the MCU.
    • Lots of stories were hinted at but I’ll just say there is an episode with Bucky fighting a zombie Steve Rogers.
  • Emily Vancamp returns as Agent Sharon Carter and Wyatt Russell is cast as U.S. Agent in ‘Falcon and The Winter Soldier’
  • ‘WandaVision’ footage was shown (not released to the public) and it’s looking really weird.
    • Kat Dennings, from Thor 1 and 2, and Randall Park, from Ant Man and The Wasp, will be joining the cast.

 

Disney

  • The live action ‘Lady and the Tramp’ trailer dropped
  • Dwayne Johnson and Emily Blunt showed a trailer for the movie ‘Jungle Cruise’.
    • The trailer is not released to the public yet.
  • A trailer was released for the sequel ‘Maleficent: Mistress of Evil’.
  • More footage for the live action remake of ‘Mulan’ was shown to the audience.
  • A prequel to ‘101 Dalmatians’ was announced starring Emma Stone as Cruella de Vil.
  • Pixar announced a new animated movie named ‘Soul’
    • Starring Jamie Fox, Phylicia Rashad, Daveed Diggs, Tina Fey, and Questlove.
  • More footage was shown for Pixar’s movie ‘Onward’
    • While on stage, Tom Holland said “It’s been a crazy week but I want you to know that I’m grateful from the bottom of my heart and I love you 3000”
  • Disney announced a new animated movie ‘Arya and the Last Dragon’ inspired by the culture of Southeast Asia.
    • Starring Cassie Steele and Awkwafina.
  • Evan Rachel Wood and Sterling K. Brown join the cast of ‘Frozen 2’
    • Tons of new images were shown and available to the public.

 

Star Wars

  • ‘The Mandalorian’ got its first public trailer
  • Star Wars Episode 7 had a trailer (which has not been publically released yet) that is rumored to reveal that Rey has gone to the Dark Side
    • There was also a new Ep. 7 movie poster released
  • Star Wars: Clone Wars Season 7 gets a release date of Feb. 2020
  • A prequel series about Cassian Andor and K2 was announced.
    • There is no release date yet.
  • Ewan McGregor is returning to play Obi Wan Kenobi in a TV series hosted on Disney+.
    • It is set to take place in between Ep. 3 and 4.

 

Additional Disney+ Announcements (Mostly Kids Stuff)

  • ‘Toy Story’ spin off starring Forky.
    • It was also mentioned there will be more spin-off shorts to come in the future.
  • ‘Lizzie McGuire’ revival is happening
  • ‘Phineas and Ferb’ are getting another movie
  • ‘High School Musical: The Musical: The Series’ will be a thing.
  • A ‘Monsters Inc.’ spin-off titled ‘Monsters At Work’ is happening that takes place right after the first movie.
    • No announcements of original cast members joining or if we get an answer to what happens after Mike walks through the door at the end of the film.
  • A Christmas movie starring Anna Kendrick and Bill Hader was announced titled ‘Noelle’
  • A weird announcement was made for an unscripted TV show called ‘Muppets Now’ that will have celebrity quests will be coming in 2020.
